    Please explain...

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I just had a number of posts in a specific deleted without any discussion with me and their complete removal leaving no trace of their existence!

I have participated in many forums for years and i have never seen posts removed without trace in this way, it reflects very badly on the forum.

I am wondering whether perhaps in this forum the sponsors exercise undue influence on the moderators running the forum, as posts in response to mine by a sponsor reflected very poorly on the sponsor and were quite unprofessional.

Because the posts were completely wiped without trace it leaves the impression that the sponsor was able to convince the owners of the site to cover up the sponsors behaviour and pretend like it never happened!

I can understand the moderators or sponsor in this case deleting the details of his own posts, and even deleting my responses to him that could be deemed off-topic - but to delete all trace of all the original posts including my completely on-topic and relevant original post is something I have never seen on another forum.

Yeah, I read that thread too and the exchange reflected very poorly on the sponsor in question so I can understand why theyd want it removed. Yeah, its not great form but this is not a level playing field either. Those that pay for the site are paying for positive press. If their conduct is less than polite then for PR purposes they would want that rectified. Wouldnt you? Im sure all 13000 read the exchange and I for one was most impressed by the non-Americanised spelling. We have two choices here, behave or begone. Ill be good for now... Good luck!

    Re: Please explain...

As the sponsor concerned, it reflected poorly on both parties and I was surprised to see such vitriol on CoffeeSnobs. We dont do that here.

Im disappointed that it came to that but am pleased that a thread that was well off topic is now back on topic.

Im more than happy to apologise- and eat my hat if offence was caused, but bad language is out of line, whatever the context.

We live in a time where we receive consistent attacks on price from members of the public who too often have an incomplete understanding of the costs of doing business in Australia. Incessant and one-sided attacks ultimately wear you down- especially with incorrect information and Im the first to admit the fuse is getting a tad short on this issue. I am over the sniping. ::)

Guys, if you want a price, ask. If you want to discuss pricing, ask. Theres nothing wrong with manners.*

    Re: Please explain...

That response shows exactly why whole posts and any record of them shouldnt be deleted - now a different spin can be put on what happened and what was posted and no one other than those that saw the thread will be any the wiser.

Far better to have left the on-topic posts and just removed the off-topic inappropriate posts from the sponsor, and my replies to them.

I guess I have had it made patently clear that this is not a public forum, but rather a commercial advertising site and should I choose to continue to post I will just have to accept that.

As you well know, thats exactly what I did. Seeing I got no help here i managed to source the Australian distributer and contact them directly.

    Re: Please explain...

As maheel said, coffeesnobs is a commercial enterprise and Andy sets the rules, but we dont necessarily have to suck it up if all/many members dont like something - part of running a business is responding to feedback received and I have a hunch that Andy would take the user communities views seriously. If you feel Andy needs to be made aware of something, the best thing is to email him directly as he doesnt always read every thread.

I have to say though that the posts you refer to did seem to be getting a touch personal and while the mods may have removed one or two more than strictly necessary, I dont think they were being unreasonable.

In general, I dont find the commercial nature of coffee snobs overly intrusive and the forums are lively and useful.

    Galumay, I too was surprised.
I actually responded to one of your posts (prior to removal) offering some alternative advice, shame to see that my post was also removed along with yours :o

    How is that relevant sniff?

The CS Admin Team which includes we Mods, all work within a consultative environment under the guidance and auspices of the Site Owner - Andy Freeman. None of us operate in isolation and we all work hard at maintaining the CS Forum to the high standards that it is well known for and appreciated by the vast majority of the membership.

As we all know, you cant please everyone all of the time but we sure work hard at trying to do exactly that.....

May be. But I definitely sense a conflict of interest at times between being both a moderator and a sponsor.

    Re: Please explain...

Usually when a thread goes off topic a mod moves the OT part to a new thread - which is entirely appropriate. It means the original thread can stay on topic.

Heated debate can often arise on this forum - which is all part of the coffee passion.

I sympathize with Galumay in that in my professional life I have seen similiar things done, where certain portions of transcript are taken out of context and then put in a new light.

However I also commend Chris on taking the opportunity to apologise.

The benefit in a mod posting "off topic replies have been moved to this topic" is that the reader can choose whether or not to follow the off topic thread, or continue reading the original post.

This thread seems to have been started to ask that mod to explain why the posts were deleted and not moved to an OT thread.

That hasnt happened. Thats why its relevant.

    Re: Please explain...

Sniff, the way I see it, there was a debate about what constitutes "courteous behaviour". At least one of those posts included some distasteful name-calling.

I think deleting part of these posts would have removed the context, and moving them to a separate thread wouldnt be productive.

Im glad theyre gone, and am also glad we have a Mod Team that are helpful and keep this forum an environment that people can enjoy.

    Re: Please explain...

    Hello Sniff,

Can I reiterate that mod action is a consultative process here? * :-?

Sometimes off topic posts are moved to a new thread. When that happens, a link to the new thread is automatically generated.

At CS, direct attacks on another member are not on and for this reason, the offending material was removed to take the thread back on topic. When this action is taken, no link is created because the post/s have been binned. If you wouldnt say something face to face, its not appropriate here either.

In the overwhelming majority of deletions, except for spam posts, the member concerned receives a PM to explain the reason for the deletion. Sometimes members take a while to notice they have a PM and this type of thread can be generated as a result.

Believe me, the mod team is happiest when we are doing nothing and we are lucky that this forum is well run and doesnt degenerate into chaos and personal attacks as so many other forums do. Also note that mods work for love, not payment.

The rules of the forum are very few and very clear. Sadly, some members dont take the time to read them and even if they have, take the view that the rules dont apply to them anyway. They apply. ::)

Do the right thing and we run smoothly. Step out of line with abuse or other inappropriate posts and you may well have a member of the mod team apply the final rule:

As always on the CoffeeSnobs forums we will exercise our right to delete first and ask questions later.

    Re: Please explain...

At the risk of flogging a dead horse I would like to make a point here.
I can understand (doesnt mean I agree) why the posts between Chris & Galumay were deleted. What I dont understand is why my post was deleted when I attempted to bring the thread back to the topic with a direct answer to Galumays original question along with an alternative option (who just by chance is not a sponsor).

Too right. We all just have to take a break, sit back and just let it wash over.
As according to the rules, posts will be removed without explanation.

Lets get over it, and get on with the enjoyment of coffee and being part of a friendly community.

Galumay, I for one hope you will find what youre looking for in the end. Cheers. :)
