    Confined Space...

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I noticed this outside the Australian Technology Park in Sydney on the weekend.

Every drain on the entrance had "Confined Space" painted on it.

Serious?* Really? Do we need this or a sign that says "high tree", "hard concrete", "wet puddle"

The world is a little whackier every day.

At least the grates are cycle-friendly.

Id imagine its a council OH&S regulation for any confined space to be marked visibly as such, especially if its designed to be clambered into by a person (for cleaning and maintenance)

Having said that, you gotta be a complete numpty to not realise that these are confined spaces when youre climbing in.

    Probably some pen-pushers idea* ::)

Believe it or not you need a ticket to work in confined spaces nowadays http://www.pinnacleconfinedspace.com.au/
I imagine the sign above the drain is to inform workers no access without a CS ticket. :)

    Hi

A "confined space" also means that there may be toxic fumes or a depletion of O2 or increased CO2 present. Hence the signage is alerting workers to more dangers than just the literal "confined space".
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confined_space

That however does not make the signage any less stupid :-)
Perhaps the trees should be labelled with "Danger - Heights".

    Re: Confined Space...

Andy, I watched a confined space video for process safety on Monday afternoon at work. Tragic. Many of the vessels at my worksite are nitrogen blanketed, so asphyxiation is very quick. To go through the permit process at my worksite, allow upto 1 day to complete the permits to gain access.

Safety 1st and we all want to go home to our loved ones at the end of the day.

Sure I understand the concept (and have had access to a tagged confined space vessel in the past after it was "sniffed safe" every 15 minutes) and I agree we need to make workplaces safer...

...but this is a drain in a street. You cant climb in, at best you could put an arm in there to get a tennis ball out.
    ;D

I didnt notice if the toilet bowls at the site had the same warning label for what would be a similar level of danger.

I dunno bout that Andy. Ive been in more than one in a public place as a kid and more than one in a public place as an adult and more than I can count on private property for work purposes. And I worked in IT !
