Woman finds maggots crawling in her airline snack

Next time you think about complaining about your airplane food, know this: You could have it much, much worse. Australian Victoria Cleven was aboard a Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne when she opened up a bag of trail mix distributed by a flight attendant and ate them. Moments later, she realized that mixed in with the nuts, raisins, and grains were maggots: "I couldnt talk. I was nearly throwing up. I was beside myself," Cleven says. Photos and videos Cleven took mid-air back up her story; the airline has apologized and offered her $400 off the $1600 flight.

The above was "kindly" sent to me by a friend who knows Im flying to LA on Qantas next week.
    ...with friends like these...
    ;D

Im surprised that Qantas only offered $400 to her.* I would have thought they would give her a free return trip somewhere and then hit-up The Sydney Biscuit Company or their insurance company.

Ill keep an eye out for Bear Grylls munchies on the flight.

They arent maggots as they would only be found in meat products. These are moth larvae.

They may provide better nutrition than some airline food Ive tried.

Im sure Sydney Biscuit Company and Qantas would be happy to sell you the returned packets.... cheap!

I was just sent this link from a media company who have posted a skype interview with Victoria Cleven
    http://www.rightthisminute.com/video/woman-finds-maggots-airplane-trail-mix-show-version

I laughed at the interviewers who were as shocked as the rest of us just how bad the compaines handled this.

Qantas has now offered her 50% refund on the flight and a one time access to the Qantas Club Lounge.

Sheeze, some companies handle "pear shaped" very badly and could learn something from small business that typically tries really hard to right an oops.

Im sure Qantas could have shouted this family a week in Europe and then sent the bill to the Sydney Biscuit Company ( Manna From Heaven ).

In an ironical twist, RightThisMinute also had a video clip of a family dog being shot by police when it ran at them while serving papers. The dog was injured (not killed) and the family was awarded $620,000 in court.

Re: Woman finds maggots crawling in her airline snack

    A wider viewpoint.

If they had correctly called them weevils (instead of maggots) their news stories wouldnt have had the same impact and we all know never to expect the truth to get in the way of a good story. So maybe qantas should be threatening the journos involved with legal action for sensationalising the unfortunate incident, which of course leads to more damage to the airlines (or trail mix manufacturers) reputation than need be.

And of course it may not be the manufacturers problem. It may rather, be the airlines problem for example if theyve been holding on to stock for too long or if it hasnt been stored properly. Weevils are a seasonal occurence as in they hatch out at a certain time of year. Stock therefore needs to be kept low and cool when approaching that season.

So as usual there is more to this than meets the eye or in what we are told through the media, and blind uninformed consumer indignation doesnt help.

Considering the real impact of finding a few weevils in a packet of trail mix (be it ever so off putting), to refund the value of an airline ticket would be complete stupidity on the part of the airline and there would be other more cost effective ways to deal with the situation that would still send out the right kind of message to their clients, that they really do care. If theyve mishandled that, its another issue.

As stated, just a wider viewpoint.

    I dont agree.

Weevils or maggots makes little difference, they are both critter lavae that shouldnt be in the trail mix.

I would assume it was a sealed packet so the fault sits with the manufacturer.* If they cold stored the grain then the critter eggs wouldnt hatch (which is why we have to fumigate or cold store coffee beans landing in this country).* They saved a dollar, cut a corner and deserve a slap as far as Im concerned.

The retailer (Qantas) could have handled it far better.* They were dealing with one customer, it could have been easily fixed and they could have kept their own name out of the news. If just 5 people booked a different airline they lost $10k for not contacting the customer for a fortnight or dealing with it well.* Im sure if they tossed a couple of free tickets to her (or moved her up to the pointy end of the plane for the remainder of the flight) and then pointed out that it was SBC who dropped the ball she would have been happy not to say which airline.

Rubbish.* Most airlines are very diligent about what gets served, how its stored warehoused and labeled and sheeze, this is trail mix, a shelf item.* As I mentioned, the eggs should have been killed prior to Qantas getting the stock.

Im more than happy with my blind uninformed consumer indignation, there were critters in her glossy box "premium" trailmix.

If she found weevils in some budget home brand oats that were sold after useby date at NQR then "own fault" I say.* The best she should hope for is money back on the item.

Another interesting aside here (interesting for me anyway) was that this was on a flight from LAX to MEL.* Normally the food on the flight is sourced from where they leave from.* Typically you will get Australian orange juice on the way out and Californian on the way back.* Seems silly to fly trail mix from Australia to LA so you can hand it out on the return trip.* Maybe its light enough to be viable although this is the industry that saved money with hollow ice cubes.

I guess the journo considered this description of the critters as the lesser of two weevils.

And, hey, Ryan Air would have tried to levy a weevil surcharge if it happened on one of their planes.

Re: Woman finds maggots crawling in her airline snack

Speaking of critters in food, i remember when i was about hmmm 8 or 9 i guess, i was helping stock the kiosk at the Grafton Speedway, putting out the chips and choccy bars, i opened up a brand new box of Picnics and about to put it on the shelf and i spot a Picnic sitting there all on its own, oh well being a kid i thought i will do the right thing and sit it on top of the now freshly opened box.
So i finish up helping out and think to myself i should reward myself for such a great job helping out and boy those Picnics looked really good, walked around the front and said, 1 Picnic please, payed my money and walked off, bit into it in the half dark, hmm whats this spider web stuff, hmmm something is wriggling around too ;D, well that got spat out quick smart >:(
I went back and got up them ;D , nah they gave me another one after i explained i must of got the one that had been sitting there for a month or so.

Phew...visited the Grafton Speedway a few times in the late 80s....narrowly missed injury when a car hit the fence and a flagpole was knocked over into the crowd. Food was good though...thanks for taking one for the team.

    hahahaha

yes the wooden planked fence brings back lots of memories of boredom :(
the fence crew used to earn their keep, a few broken planks wasnt too bad of a stoppage but when a post had to be replaced as well >:(
