Talk on the current state of stem cell research by Dr Robert Lanza
The first of 4 clips - a fascinating talk on where stem cell research is at by leading stem cell scientist Dr Rob Lanza,, regenerative medicine is on its way.
Dr. Robert Lanza at CCRI, 10/29/2013 - Part I - YouTube
A few tips on whats in the video:-
A cure for blindness - Dr Lanza is running 2 FDA approved trials (SMD + AMD) using human embryonic stem cell (hESC) derived RPE cells, these are the only FDA approved human embryonic stem cell trials - results so far show visual improvement, attachment of cells and longevity of the RPE's. One patient went from 20/800 to 20/40, from blind to riding his horse and applying to get his license back. There is a Lancet article on the first 2 patients injected, Stem Cell Treatment For Blindness Shows Promise In Trials - Medical News Today
Blood and platelets - Dr Lanza has developed a bioreactor that can manufacture O neg blood and platelets, they are in discussions with the FDA waiting for trial approval - this is a real biggy, they have also developed a medium to store the pre-platelet cells so they can be transported to a battlefield or accident scene where they can be thawed, developed and used.
Mesenchymal cells - MSC's have the capacity to reboot the immune system, there are over 300 FDA approved trials in the US at the moment using adult IPS cells, Dr Lanza has a much more potent human embryonic MSC which took MS rats from paralysis to 'leaping', also used in mice with breast cancer tumours, injected into the mice tails they eliminated the tumour completely. MSC's appear to be the future healer class cells, but trials using hESC's are yet to be approved, this is in the pipeline.
I forgot to add that the embryonic cells they use come from stored embryo's that are no longer needed by their IVF owners, donated and screened. They use one cell then freeze the embryo, it is not harmed or destroyed. There are thousands of people alive today who had the same procedure done when they were just an embryo, a safe and proven method used in IVF to test the embryo.
