As usual the Murdoch rag is full of it.

For a more temperate response to the issue, see The Age. I hope this link works.

In news that may or may not be related, Cardinal Pell has been sacked from the vatican advisory council.

At first I thought the 'supression order' must have been related to the expectation of an appeal by the defendant but I guess that doesn't really make sense as appeals are not decided by a jury and judges would be expected to be able to maintain their impartiality regardless of publicity. Given the reporting of previous similar cases in recent times I'm not sure why the ban in this case. The lead-up to it was freely reported. What am I missing? Possibility to do with the anonymity of the plaintiffs?
Always concerned about 'freedom of speech issues'.

Rocky, there are two trials involved. The trials were split so parties involved in one physical location and time span were in the first trial, those involving a different location and time span were in the second. Both jury trials. The first has found against the defendant, so the defendant gets a fair trial in the second trial the suppression order is in place. It is fair to assume that appeals will be lodged. This order by the judge at least goes some way to nullify the 'jury bias' issue and arguments the second trial isn't fair.

Thanks 338, now I understand. That is fair and reasonable.
