    CoffeeSnobs - Software upgrade

Okay, so you 'aint going mad.
The forum did look different for a while.

For those that didn't see it, at midnight we started a software upgrade, it went live sometime in daylight and I was happily working through the minor bugs and it all went pear-shaped.

Tried to back track a little, then a little more but it wasn't going well so at 2pm I bit the bullet and reverted back what we had at midnight last night.

Sorry, anything posted this morning has gone.

    Sigh.

We'll have another crack at it one day (not sure when).
Need to sort through a few things and hopefully it's smoother (and faster) next time and we can get it all done in the dark!

Worth the effort Andy, the new site was good while it was up. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Flynn, it was REALLY close but not quite comfortable enough to keep digging.

I'm super happy that my "plan B" worked and we are back on the air.

I'll look forward to the next shot at it!

Looked really good. Modern, cean looking and the brief time I had with it seemed easier to navigate.

Great work Andy. I look forward to using it when it's up again.

I'm glad you're back on the old look. The new look was just awful and not as easy to navigate, lots of unnecessary scrolling.

I got really confused when I loaded up the forum this morning... then even more confused when I came back to visit later

Didn't mind the new lay out actually.

Was not really accessible to me, initially thought the site must be down, then got the odd snippit, including the forum upgrade information, then about 10 AM could not get anything, didn't really see enough of it to pass judgement.

FWIW I'm using a desktop machine, Windows 10 with Firefox.

Tried that, was still unable to access any meaningful content.

Initially there was a setting on the server side over the security certificate but that was soon corrected and resolved all reported connection issues over it. For the most part Firefox had no issues connecting, it was other browsers that were having problems with the security certificate issue.

If you were trying to use bookmarks that would have been a problem as the address format on the new software was different so you had to start at the homepage and make all new bookmarks.

Beyond that we'll have to wait for the next live run to do further testing.

Just bad timing I think Yelta, it was a flurry of activity on the server from daylight when everyone got out of bed (or started from in bed) and I was fixing most problems before many people noticed. With the wrong timing you could just hit the bad bits though!

Yeah, its a big change and I understand some people wont like it but the performance was better as are some of the features (that not many got to play with). A lot of the quirks (font sizes, colours, navigation) I had already tweaked before it went back live and in time additional navigation shortcuts and changes will be added and adjusted to suit.

The new SSL server certificate was a configuration issue (me!), a missed setting deep in a config file that some browsers interpreted differently to others and it took 20 minutes to replicate, find and fix (on a live server) with thanks to the help of those giving great feedback it was a pretty fast turnaround.

To put the upgrade into perspective, over the 16 years we have had multiple different flavours of forum and dozens of different versions, it has 100's if not 1000's of patches and security fixes and some components are no longer written or supported. No company sells a glossy box that will upgrade it with a "click here, next, next" type install. What's needed is to replicate the existing server, convert and massage the existing content into the correct format, move 60,000 attachments and then jamb the data into a new software package that then needs to be configured, secured and tested on a gazillion different devices. It really is a monster task and even though I've done plenty of bare-box off-line run throughs in the last 3 months there will always be some housework after a live deployment as some of the configuration needs to be done when connected to the Internet with the right names and IP addresses etc.

Oh, and not everything can be fixed. The URL's of threads and posts will change, bookmarks will need updating, google will need to index again but we get to keep years of community wisdom (and the other stuff too).

Now I know where some of the "new" hidden gotcha's are I can find and test solutions before the next deployment attempt. Not sure when that will be yet, the end of October and most of November is full of holes ( see the calendar ) but we'll try and get on top of it.

Thanks heaps to those that helped this morning, can't have been much fun troubleshooting but getting tangible feedback was invaluable. I appreciated the help even if I didn't have time to say so in the flurry.

I immediately liked the format and look. It is much cleaner and easier to navigate.

Sorry to hear things didn't go quite the way you planned Andy, hope you have better luck on your next attempt.

I tried a number of times throughout the morning to gain access, first around 7AM told me I had used an invalid link, then a series of attempts showing partial screens, couldn't log in, Google unable to find Coffee Snobs, gave up trying about 10 AM, then checked back about 4PM and all had reverted back to the old format.

No big deal this end, only a minor inconvenience, guess you cant say the same, imagine you were tearing your hair out.

I think like many on here Andy I am just grateful for you and the work you must do behind the scenes to keep this up and running.

Ditto to comments above re: efforts in keeping the site up and running. While it was up, the new format did look fresher initially but to me, somehow seemed a lot harder/more uncomfortable to read (Colors, layout ?). Personally, I was very glad to see the "old" easier to read format back this morning.

Similar here Cafelotta (what I saw of it) mind you, early days yet, I imagine a lot of these cosmetic aspects are very tweakable.

I personally quite liked the new look, although had to change some settings e.g. making Posts show latest at the top etc. But I'm sure we can all deal with the changes if it makes the site much easier to administer in the long run. Appreciate the effort you Andy, and anyone else who was involved, would have had to put into the upgrade to try and make it as seamless as possible for us.

I'd take the new layout over this one anyday! It was much better and easier to use and seemed less cluttered (if that's the right word to use) for my liking.

I thought my phone was playing up, tapatalk stopped working, then on the phone everything looked very different on browser. message inbox looked to go into a conversation thread type of mode? (not a fan). Thought i was going nuts, all makes sense now!

I am sure the upgrade when it happens will be an improvement (might be a familiarity period), great work Andy!

    Cheers
