    Boxing Day Sale - some Coffee gear 30% off (yeah right)

    Haven't seen much around in the way of true Boxing Day discounts for coffee gear. The one I came across which seems to have some genuine discounts is at the DiBatoli site which is having a "30% off site-wide" sale.

    You need to compare pricing though as not everything has a true discount, as seems to be the way with most retailers these days. There are a few genuine deals though if you look for them.

    Seems to be the way mate most stores constantly run discounts from RRP so often the sales don't seem very good. I work in Car sales all of our stock is constantly discounted to the point of having no margin in it often brand new cars are sold with $50-100 total profit in them. I find these days that most sales are meaningless unless a retailer has bought all of the stock of a discontinued stock line.

    Too true. Seems the only way of finding a bargain is keeping a close eye on regular pricing and jump straight away when you see a true bargain. I let a couple of really good bargains slip by when I hesitated for a day. Never saw the pricing again. Making public on here a couple other really low prices on machines angered the price fixing gods and those discounters soon fell into line. Must say that in my experience, the coffee equipment sector is one of the worst areas of retail for this sort of activity I have come across. Even heard one distributor would stop supplying retailers who discounted one particular brand. Actually saw evidence of this as well.

    I managed to grab a Lelit Bianca today from CMT in Melbourne for 20% off retail today. They had 20% off everything’s list price. Quite a good deal!

    However, those figures will be offset by the profit made on servicing and repairs, $120 an hour minimum.

    All good and well. Aussie companies go broke because there is zero support for them- even on minuscule margins and it's not a sale unless the retailer makes a loss. We then complain when purchasing, service and support moves overseas or we have to drive 15 minutes further to find someone who can assist.

    30% on bits and pieces would frequently represent at cost and in many cases a loss, but that's still not considered a "genuine bargain".

    What is a fair price then? Stuff plus the retailers pants? Daughter? House?

    Scrooge alive and well. It's no wonder our economy is rooted. Mum and Dad businesses can't afford to employ and pay properly and your kids don't get a job.

    Car dealers certainly don't make $120 an hour off me.

    I do my own "servicing" which essentially is changing the oil and filter once a year. No way I am going to pay a dealer $120 an hour to switch on the radio, switch on the windscreen wipers, turn on the lights...to ensure everything works.

    Whether you service your own car or not is irrelevant. The majority of the population do pay through the nose for servicing and repairs.

    Yup...

    All the "car dealership franchises" know how to squeeze every last cent out of you for touching your wheels.
    Luckily, we have access to a master mechanic (a mate) who builds and maintains racing cars of many kinds. Certified for Porsche, Ferrari, etc...

    Does excellent work for a fraction of what any of the franchises would charge.

    Yeah- can see that. I guess that the franchises have few options.

    They spend many millions establishing, employing and purchasing the equipment needed to do the job. They provide hospitality and coffee (shudder!) for clients, complimentary loan cars and/or shuttles to take you where you need to be. If they make micro margins on the cars, the money has to come from somewhere. I guess that's why some brands are moving to online sales in that the price is the price and the buyer takes it or leaves it. If a brand does it, it's fine. If all the franchisees got together and did the same thing, now that's illegal because it's price fixing!

    Great independents do good work, but sometimes can't compete on the frills aspects of the service side of things. The good thing is that some of them are way better at service than the biggies.

    We've been stung by a couple of the "biggies" over time, atrocious workmanship and even damage and lost components, then they have the hide to charge a premium for the privilege....

    The dealer who sold me my new car made very little margin. Huge discount to start with. No finance, no paint and upholstery protection etc...

    And since I live too far from the dealership I've never taken it there for a service during the 3-year warranty period. One dealer did want about $500 for the first service.

    I demanded they justify the cost for what is essentially an oil change. Oh, it uses synthetic oil Mobil 1 which is expensive, said they. They then suggested $400.

    Subsequent services...oil changes...have been done by my local Midas franchisee for $160.

    The warranty has expired so it'll be me under the bonnet henceforth....

    And Erimus, if we're talking about car servicing and the exorbitant costs dealers charge, I think my post is "relevant".

    Much of the cost of majors' servicing derives from manufacturer requirements imposed on dealerships. eg insisting that servicing is co-located with showrooms which are often in high opportunity cost inner-city locales.

    Service while you wait with coffee soon backfired on one local dealership when a window was installed overlooking the service bay so that clients could watch their car being serviced. Clients soon saw that their car was not attended all the time during the time that they were being charged!

    Far too true. Everyone wants everything to be dirt cheap, yet they all want higher wages. Meanwhile corporations only care about "maximising profit for their shareholders" by minimising costs / maximising revenue (... and if I see that phrase too many more times someone may get hurt...). I know I am not the only one who sees the double standard here.

    FWIW, I blame the US consumer for most of the havoc. Every year they want every item to be cheaper and then wonder why manufacturers have to skimp on quantity or quality of input materials and labour to meet their "demands". I have lived through the constant cost cutting enforced by "big retailers & wholesalers" onto makers and see any costly "non essential for a sale" feature dropped whilst useless "no or low cost" options are flourishing - all dictated by sheer survival. In my own industry I recently retired when the best (high tech) gear I could currently buy would not have even made it into my workshop for initial testing 15 years ago. If I wanted cheap that was easy, however quality was unavailable at any price.

    Oz had a similar train wreck when "Colworths" decided to smash the earnings of the dairy industry to allow $1 per litre milk to gain a sales advantage over "Wooles" - and did they really think their competitor would simply watch from the sidelines? The obvious happened and now it is really difficult to get quality milk (in glass bottles - I hate the taste of plastic) at any price. Meanwhile 5th generation dairy farmers are going under. "Pay peanuts and get monkeys" could be rewritten as "get it cheaper and watch both the quality and long term jobs vanish".

    PS: That is why it is so important to support guys like Andy (CS owner) who actually provides a service and does "fair crack" donations to help others. One of him is worth dozens of the usual corporations.

    I actually laugh at when people say car dealers make a lot of money. Historically yes. But within the last ten years not so much.

    New car departments lose significant money. I know one new car department budget was to lose 1.2 million for the year. Finance makes money and so does the service department.

    Return on Sales for most dealers is between 0-2% these days. Some successful brands are at 4%.

    Id ask if you know any business that operates on such low margins. In fact some are losing money.

    My information is I was apart of the industry from a distributor side and knew all the financial averages of all brands and dealers.

    Most businesses depending on the industry operate on 15-25% Return on Sales.

    And mark up on retail items can be 40-200% so a 30% discount is easily achievable. Which is why you see coffee machines rarely discounted over 20% as the margin is about 30% but accessories can be had at 30-50% off.

    Cars are pretty good now. Hardly ever see them broken down. Change the oils and filters from new and cover the warranty yourself.
    Or buy a 3yo car with service history and run it into ground. Don't spend a cent.. works for the car ex-wife has.
