I will be traveling to New York just after Christmas, I was just wondering if anyone has been to the Empire State Building and if you had to wait a long time to go up to the top.

    hi Kaz...

the ESB is a pretty popular place, particularly in the evening when the millions of Christmas lights in the city make for a spectacular view.

we went in the late afternoon and spent about 90 minutes in the queue... my husband went back a few days later early in the morning, at opening, and could walk straight through.
be warned... it is freeeeezing up there!!
but, an experience i would not have wanted to miss out on!
    enjoy your trip!!

PS... try to get to the ice scating rink in Central Park... and the Christmas tree in the Rockefeller Centre, and the Coca Cola shop on 4th Ave, and, ... sooo much! :D ;) ::)

Thanks for that. My son is in Army in the Middle East and is going to meet us in New York. I have always been a fan of An Affair to Remember and thought it would be great to go up the top of the ESB. I will try and fit in as much as I can, we will be there for 3 days.

Have a great time with your son Kaz, my daughter went to NY last year and they loved it, she said it was a 24 hour city, so vibrant.
    Enjoy............................

Just checking where Minnesota is. We will be staying with my Brother in Charlotte North Carolina for two weeks after our three days in New York. If it is close I will see if I can make it. Always pleased to meet other CS.

Ah, North Carolina, tobacco and tar paper shack country. Well probably not much in Charlotte, but theyre still out there in the countryside. Ive driven between North Carolina and Minnesota many times over the years, although never just for coffee. It would be quite the trip for a cuppa as it takes about 24 hours of driving, stopping only for gas, to make the trip between the two. ::) ;D

I thought yall might be stopping in Minnesota as many International flights use it as a port of entry/exit. :)

    Re: New York

wow, Kaz, 3 days... that will require a meticulous itinerary!!

there is sooo much to see and do, from:
x just standing on the corner of Times Square,
x having roasted chestnuts off a street vendor...
x or a river cruise (and check out the Port Authoritys coach terminal.. an underground city!!), with a gawp at the statue of Liberty ( talk about queues... get there on the very first boat!!)...
x a look at the aircraft carrier which is now a museum: it has some very interesting planes on board, and the (ex navy pilot) guides are all worth listening to, they have wonderful stories to tell
x a wander down 4th and 5th Avenue and look at ( or maybe even walk into and browse...) those fantastic stores...
x a sightseeing bus tour which will take the hassle out of trying to fit it all in.. ;D
x dinner at a NY steak house...
to a wander past all the big apartment buildings lining Central Park, checking out the horse-drawn carriages and marvel at the super stretched limos, Hummers and other Yank-tanks... (with all due respect, Javaphile., ;)..)... they are truly a sight to be seen!!

and you will get to see it all decked out in its Christmas finery, perhaps even with snow...

hope you and your family will have a wonderful time with your son!
    enjoy!!

    Re: New York

Thanks so much, I will have to start planning very carefully. Would you suggest getting tickets online before I travel. You can get ones for ESB and Statue of Liberty. Or should I just get them when I get there.

    Re: New York

we got ours when we were there... but then , we had a group of 5, so one would stand in the line for the ticket, and the others would wait in the main queue...
might be an idea, though, to get them before you leave... would be nice to walk through the "express" line straight into the attraction!! :D
