Gotta agree, I dont like this heat.
Would love to have just sat on the couch watching cricket but we are getting a veranda built in a couple of weeks and have to dismantle our shed. So have to cram 7 years of crap into our garage. Bad enough for me but my wife is almost 4 months pregnant.
Lots of water and rest stops.
Got to meet our new neighbours today only to find that one of them at least is a fellow snob.

We have had a bad night too as our lovely 2 year old daughter insists on sitting on a real chair at the moment, and she fell off tonight with a toddler fork in her hand. The fork went straight through the fleshy part of her ear! :o
Some blood and a lot of crying later she seems ok and the wound seems only minor. :( :(
Think we might have to suffer through some tantrums with going back to the high chair. Just cant stop thinking it could have been soooo much worse.

I know what you mean Lizzy, even with the air con, it has been pretty hot inside the house.

Trying to keep the kitties cool has been hard, they just lay on the bed or the floor under the ducts trying to get some cool air. Poor things. The beasties cant remove their fur coats unfortunately.

Here yall go. Perhaps this will help ya feel cool, at least for a few seconds if nothing else!

I took this pic last week-end on the drive home from the family Christmas gathering. Much of the southern part of the state had conditions that produced this extremely thick hoar frost that covered everything. This is a rare occurrence and made the hour and a half drive home through a winter fairy land most enjoyable. :)

FYI The current outside temp here is -22C. ;D

When our days are like this, we just grab an ice-cube out of the freezer, and rub it around on our cats bellies until their fur is reasonably damp. Seems to help them out a lot, and they dont really mind us doing it now that they realise that they benefit from it.

They look a bit daggy afterwards though ;D,

Hows that for irony, SE Qld is having perfect coffee drinking weather. Dont think we have seen 30 C in over a week and its rained 8 days of the last 10.

The news reports are showing tourist destinations being hit hard by bad weather, I think because they are all here in my roastery. Not much else to do in the rain on the Sunny coast but drink great coffee.

I just got home from work (1pm) and it was 41.3C, I wondered why I had consumed 4 litres of water during the morning and it looks like plenty more on the horizon here in Perth.

Talking about drinking great coffee Jason,

John, my brother is now starting to get it regarding the need to use great beans freshly roasted if he wants to enjoy wonderful brews. Hes asked me to nominate where he can buy great brown beans in the immediate Brisbane environs, so naturally I thought of your good self 8-). Who do you supply beans to in Brisbane that he would be able to visit and buy the odd bag or two? Hes not interested in buying via mail order just yet as he wants to sample before he buys (fussy bugger I know, but hes a developing coffee snob ;)).

You can PM me if you like, might be the best way ::)

Just made a batch the other day in fact.

Grind about 500g at a coarse plunger, slowly add 3L water, press grounds down to wet, cover and let sit at least 24-36 hours. Strain off grounds, and refrigerate. Mix with cold milk and drinking choc, or your favourite flavoured syrup.

Your wish is granted! CP is short for Cold Press or Cold Process depending on who you talk too. :)

Hhhmmm....That sounds like a bit too long of a soak there Nunu. Ive found that as the soak time goes past 18 hours more and more bitter flavors of the coffee are extracted into the concentrate. As a general rule of thumb in hot temps I only soak for 12 hours. During the cold months when the house is at 15C Ill extend that out to as long as 18 hours. The exact soak time is of course dependent on the fineness of the grind as well as ones tastes.

Unless youre using a very coarse filter or grind do not stir the grounds in the water! Stirring the grounds will free the finer grinds from with-in the mass of grounds which will then plug the filter, making draining difficult if not impossible.

    Re: Can someone please....

My CP batches tend to be on the weaker end of the scale, even with 24+ hours of brewing. I reckon the water ratio is a tad on the high side. Luckily for me, no bitterness comes through. It might be that I use a much coarser grind.

I never stir the coffee, just a gentle press with the back of a wooden spoon to wet the grounds. I use a tea "sock" to strain and it works quite well. Using a very fine sieve will still give you sediment in the bottom, but the "sock" takes care of it.

Yeah, it sounds like youre using a significantly coarser grind than I am. Your ratio is just a tad higher than what I use. Im running at 2.9l per 500g.

Have you experimented with the grind to see if you can go finer with-out too many particles making it through? I find the flavor changes very noticeably if I go beyond the soak times I gave previously.

on the risk of going totally OT, i use a bra-washing- bag (made out of very fine nylon fabric) for my filtering needs :-[, be it apple jelly, curds for cheese, stock for savoury jelly, and now: CP.....

it boils clean, no smell, easy to fill, zip up and retain the solids, then hang up over the collecting vessel...

oh, and i have a sparate one for my bras.... :P

ok, i have a pot of CP standing on my kitchen bench, quietly macerating.
tomorrow, when we slave in the hot sun re-packing the furniture in the garage (cause it didnt all fit in, the first time.. :() we will imbibe the cool draught, swetenend with sugar, laced witih cocoa, just to keep us going... bit like a No-Doze milkshake, really... ;)

Very similar to the Vietnamese coffee sock, except a bit shorter.

You could probably try unused nylons and get a similar effect.
