Easy. Mecca, corner King and York, bottom of the Grace Hotel (but not the Graces own cafe). If this is one of the ones youve already tried, then... there must be something wrong. Mecca is one of the best cafés in Sydney.

    hmmmm.

Initial thoughts. Flat watery taste. Lacks oomph. Milk exceptionally hot.
    Ill try again tomorrow.

    Any other suggestions?

Thats good news mate. As far as coffee in the CBD goes. Its consistently the best IMO. Theres a few others that I goto, but Mecca is usually the first port of call in the CBD. I try and time it so that Im missing the peak hour at Mecca (first thing in the morning, lunch etc), they can put more love into the cup ;)

Glad you went back. I have never had other than exceptional coffee there (even, occasionally, with milk). But I have never been there in the busy periods, when it would be hard to get a table, anyway. They love talking about their coffee and machines, too, when they have time. Keep going and get to know them. Theres also a new branch down near the Quay.

Just going by their machines, you know these guys at Mecca are out to make an exceptional cup.

I was awed by their relatively rare Schomer modified Mistral machine. I asked why they werent using thier Synesso and they gave me the full rundown on just how modified their Mistral is. They may have been caught up in that US-led 3rd wave hype, but you cant fault their aspiration to excellence in coffee.

In the end your taste buds are the ultimate judge. Nevertheless, Ive sampled a few of their wares and it was as good as their beans allowed.

Another fellow CSer who works at the MECCA2 down at circular quay tells me that they are getting rid of the 2gp Synesso and getting ANOTHER Mistral (why not ::)) and a Clover is making an appearance sometime too (if not there already). I dont quite know where that is going to all fit... maybe next to the Ditting? 8-)

Well, that will be very interesting to try, especially if they choose appropriate coffees for the Clover. Interesting, too about the Mistral, but I wonder if this has the same provenance as in Mecca 1? I think the first one was one of Schomers early efforts, with nothing spared in the way of control. I havent been to Mecca 2 yet, but its actually closer to me, so I will when Im back in town.

Anyone know if they still use Rio coffee?

The second Mistral is in apparently - Ill probably be visiting Mecca 1 on the weekend to check it out...

I have a feeling the Synesso will be used by Paul elsewhere rather than sold - why waste a perfectly good machine by letting some other sucker have it?

And as for the Clover... Not sure whats going to happen with it - the whole Starbucks buyout has put a spanner in the works.

Still using Rio coffee... for now ;)

Do you know how good it is to have a decent cup of coffee before starting work? DO YOU!?

Finally I have been blessed with a decent coffee shop near my work (within a 30m walking distance) /\/o/

Made my first pilgrimage to Mecca today.

Oh my goodness! I have never ever experienced a coffee with such a heavy, thick, viscous mouthfeel. It was delightful. Im buzzing a bit, had two doppio ristretti and an an espresso. Wow! Those Mistrals are gorgeous as well!

Also tried Velluto Nero. Few people told me they were disappointed there recently, but I had a lovely doppio ristretto, delightfully balanced. Very nice.

    Feeling a wee-bit jittery now though ;)
