    Dog Eats Beans

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
My dog likes to eat roasted beans
I have read on other posts that some people eat roasted beans or at least suck them like sweets

I donít know if itís a hazard to his health but he kind of laughs at me when a bean accidentally drops on the ground and he beats me to it

Any vet CS members know if it is ok for a dog to eat coffee beans??

    KK

P.S. my dog is an Irish Terrier and yes he smiles *:)

Ive heard that you shouldnt give dogs caffeine and chocolate, and a quick google around seems to confirm this:

    http://www.urbanhound.com/houndHealth/coffee.asp

    http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question...4121101AAh0LVb

    http://www.city-data.com/forum/dogs/...oo-much-i.html

"The symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, breathing very rapidly, hyper-excitability, and agitation. If ever you see this, then take the dog to the vet hospital immediately and have them call a poison control specialist."

So apparently most dogs that do this end up ok but it depends on the dog and the amount of coffee.

Cant say I blame the dog though. I dont have a heightened sense of smell and Im sometimes tempted to munch them just from the aroma.

Read info from those links and it looks that I should be more careful

    Re: Dog Eats Beans

    KK,

We have a couple of beagles and they are renowned for wanting to eat EVERYTHING.

When I roast, I often have stray beans hit the ground when dumping from the roaster or tipping from the cooling rack. If the dogs are around, they might chomp on 1 or 2 beans, but in true CoffeeSnob form, they only like the freshly roasted ones. Anything around from last week gets sniffed and passed over.

I very occassionally have given them a bean or two on purpose.

So far, no obvious ill effects. Ive been roasting for 6 years and the dogs are both 7 years old and still looking good.

In short, I dont think a few beans here or there will hurt, but dont let him get his head into a bowl full ;-)

    Re: Dog Eats Beans

Yea fatboy thatís exactly what my dog does
and its the odd few beans that drop after roasting
So itís not an every day occurrence

But just the same I will be more careful as he is now 14 years old but thinks he is 7
