Google has introduced street view to Australia now. I have already found old haunts in Melbourne, Cairns and Canberra with it. Walked down old streets that I used to get to work by, there goes half my day, truly amazing!
Its got a new panaraomic view for every few meters of the street and you can walk down the street as well.
Once there click on any streets that are blue and it will bring up a picture, once you see the picture click the image, holding down your button and you can scroll 360* as well as looking up and down.
Gives new meaning to giving directions.... one coffeesnob to another, ok.. start on Williams street, walk down it till you pass the ANZ, ignore that little takeaway with Vittoria coffee, now take a right down playne street till you reach that cafe with chairs at front... thats where Ill meet you.
Im just really amazed. Its not just a few major streets that have been done, its most streets! I had been following the privacy complaints of the French when "Google did Paris" but didnt know Google was doing our streets also. Its neat and many many web services will be able to use the information - some we want and some we dont want :-)
My house actually looks quite good.
The lawn has been mowed and instead of 4 cars in the driveway and on the grass theres only my wifes car to be seen and strangely its parked on the street (a rare occurance).
Even the greenwaste bin being in view (instead of its usual posi in the back yard) shows the property in a good light as obviously weve been recycling.
Its definitely from a while back (some of the pics). I brought up my apartment that I moved into in April (brand new). It shows the semi-construction site from around Christmas-January. I also looked up my office in which the shop downstairs had its "Seasons Greetings" signs still up.
Still baffles me on how they do it!?!?!
By a camera on a car. Heres the wikipedia article:Originally Posted by YeeZa link=1217896005/0#4 date=1217911663
Mines at least 5 months old.
Thats amazing! I am a good 20km from the city so I didnt think it would show me, but it did. It had my old car in the drive, so it is at least 7 or 8 months old pic for me.
My home is in it but unlike TG all our cars are in the photo
But still neat
It may be an invasion of privacy
Comment from daughter (19yo)
Ohh my god people can stalk us if they wanted to
Bullies and robbers can do a search B/4 they can plan an attack
She has a point?
She has a point but its only one of many. The entire concept of privacy and what we expect and what can be guaranteed [by Governments ? :-) ] is getting challenged by industry and governments wishing to have ever wider and deeper databases. Some people dont even place a value on privacy at all.
Googles angle on privacy is just the tip.
With over 300 street cameras along just George St in Sydney we can be tracked and analysed in as much depth as the Stazi in East Germany or the KGB in the USSR would have liked with 1000s of spys. Already in the US the FBI spys on ordinary Americans who have committed no wrong.
Where will Google end? The future will be interesting.
My guess is if bullies or robbers are planning an attack, theyd be better off with a drive by, KK. A lot of these images are already outdated.
Invasion of privacy? Despite the privacy act, our privacy was invaded, and conquered, a long, long time ago. If you use flybuys, purchasers of the data know for example, whether you prefer white or brown bread, if youre on a diet, and what pets you have. Your mobile carrier knows where you are, your ISP knows if you gamble online, and your mother can always tell if youre lying.
Combine this google-cam, with Facebook(Stalkerbook), MySpace etc - its a stalkers haven.... makes you think though.... I guess its not a live cam, but I guess thats only a matter of time.
I know that Ive been in Sydney on the mobile phone watching my parents online speaking to me on their mobile in a plaza in Europe with one of those permanent cams, that was kinda cool.
Wow that’s great. Had at look at everyone in the familys houses. My parents are on the Central Coast 70km from Sydney city and surprisingly their place was on it.
I am 50KM from Melbournes CBD and our whole area is nearly all done. But there is a patch in grey near berwick that doesnt get a look in, not sure what that is.
It was all done arround january, feb as our lawd / weeds are just brown.
Most of the Southern Highlands, NSW has been done as well. My place was done, at a guess, over 12 months ago - one of the trees in the front has grown a lot since the photo was taken, but the neighbours place shows that it cant be more than two years old.
And at least my lawn was tidy. :D
Here is a silhouette of the car they used around the keiwa valley
Pretty inconspicuous i should think, just another car on the road.
Check out this video that shows the privacy invasion aspect of this technology.
Some reports from unhappy people were coming in
With regards to unflattering shots of people taking out the rubbish also people in pyjamas and in dressing gowns
Here is a “what if”
Person on holiday on the other side of the world
Checks to see the cool shots of home on Google
1) Best friend coming out of front door? why?
2) Thief coming out with CD player under arm
3) Front yard trashed & kids passed out after massive party
4) Aeroplane crashed into roof
All possible scenarios
Well, given the 6 month lag between the photos being taken and being put on the web site, I dont think any of the scenarios (even number 1) should come as a surprise.
Its not a webcam.
Good one TG ;DOriginally Posted by Thundergod link=1217896005/0#15 date=1217993552
Well I didnt take a before and after shot of my front garden, but Ive got the before shot now for all the world to see. Ugly ugly stuff :)
(Taken on a wednesday afternoon in December 2008 in my town, going by the sun, the Christmas decorations, the empty bins out the front and the weeds in the front yard. And I was home at the time.)
What a mammoth project.
Well...at least when they photographed our area, it was green! A great way to go and remind myself what green looks like really. The place actually looks lovely! ;D
Bogongtiger, the mammoth project, google street view or your front garden? ;D
