    Brisbane City - Where?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
This has no doubt been done before so please bear with me. I will be making a few trips to Brisbane over the next few months and wonder what are the best places in the city area for a really good coffee. Say within about 4 blocks of the Mall. I imagine there are a few good places in lower Edward St? I might even get down into the Valley.
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for that. I was not aware of that part of the Forum - I have never scrolled that far down the page. (It still took my son to show me where that section was located) (computers & I function in different dimensions)

Got this from a friend in an email. no good to me here in SA, but might be worth a look on Monday...

Glen’s Espresso is opening Monday 6 July outside the Sarina Russo Building, 82 Ann Street and as an introductory bribe Glen is offering FREE COFFEE to all comers all day (limit 12 per customer).

If that’s not enough to get you Big Kev excited, here’s some extra treats to sweeten the deal:

    · ‘Glen’s Blend’. A specially developed custom coffee blend, light to medium roast, no bitterness, fantastic flavour. Sex in a cup.

    · One very, very sexy coffee machine. Most machines have one boiler. Really good ones have two. Mine has four. And it’s orange. Oh baby...

    · Beans ground fresh for each coffee and leftover milk is not re-steamed into the next coffee.

    · 100% Fair Trade Organic coffee beans. No farmers were harmed in the making of this coffee.

    · Gluten free cakes, big sandwiches, organic juices, gourmet pies*.

    · The World Famous** ‘Super Efficient Ordering System’. We like to think of it as ‘empowering customers’ rather than ‘being really, really lazy’

    · Glen’s ‘Super Efficient Payment Scheme’. (‘Building trust in the community’ rather than ‘a very bad idea’).

    · A high-class selection of stimulating reading material***.

    * Free sauce. I hate paying for sauce.

    ** Not actually world famous.

*** Glen’s comic book collection. Any Far Side fans?

I used to love the IC bar, but started to get a few bad ones when their newer barista was training. Its changed its name to 12 on Creek now, but I think they are owned by the same people? Af they serve dibella... So when its good its really good :)

Tried the campos cart just around the corner it was ok, not really to my taste though.

Usually the barmerlo on riverside ground floor is good enough if I want a cuppa

Tis a shame... But many here are about being seen and doing the trendy things... As to real coffee; those people tend to sniff out the good places and it comes back down to Quality VS hit and run.

Chic is so great they dont have a sign and the cheep coffee places around and even directly opposite, do not even know who they are....

    Re: Brisbane City - Where?

Sip espresso is near the riverside centre on Queen St.
The ground floos coffee cart opposite use to serve Campos, not sure of late.

Grove train can be good, near the city cat terminal.

Nothing else that comes to mind tho.
Chic or Coffee hit in King George Sq maybe your best bet.

I either go to Cremosa hole in the wall at the Adelaide St end of Broadway on the Mall if Im meeting someone in there, but would rather take the trek up the hill to Chic (I mean, really, what is a ten minute walk when you have a fine house blend or the choice of two very good SOs waiting for you, not to mention fine hospitality and coffee chat that is unmatched around Brissie....only 5 or 6 come to mind who match them in this dept.

Sip is definitely worth a look in. They usually have one of Venezianos SOs in the grinder and theyre going through it fast enough that its often a different bean for every day of the week.

Just updating for a few worthwhile candidates for your Brisbane CBD coffee crawl:
    - Pourboy Espresso: 26 Wharf St
    - Some mystery place (cant remember the name) down the alleyway just past Skinnys Music on Elizabeth St. This place is just awesome for how hard it was to find.

Keep ya eyes peeled for the next issue of a well known cafe mag.

Should provoke a few discussions between cafés / coffee establishments as well as those that visit and partake in that special brew.

BUT hey, at least some of us made enough noise and now; Brisbane is no longer being passed over and no longer seen as out side the perceived Coffee Mecca of "Melbourne and Sydney ".

Isnt that the Goat coffee joint - hidden away - I have had one and its quite ok. It was an Americano so that shows up the good from the bad.

    Cheers

    Re: Brisbane City - Where?

The mystery coffee place is gone-skis, theres a great big hole in the ground where the buildings used to be. The only goat place that I know of is The Frisky Goat, which is at about 171 George St and tucked into the foyer.

2 more additions to the coffee crawl (I now work at this end of town)
    - Frisky Goat (address above), typically offering 1-2 single origins and a blend that changes every couple of weeks. Beans are from Supreme Roasters.
    - Brother Espresso (127 Margaret St), 1 single origin and a house blend. Beans are from Fifth Battery. I find the coffee to be quite acidic at times, my wife calls it sour. I like it, she doesnt, YMMV.

Oh yeah. Very cool store. IIRC, theyre using a custom blend from Campos. A good selection of little chocolatey treats. Theyre open fairly late on a Friday evening, making it a nice option for a small dessert.

Theres a little espresso bar on Edward St, just down the hill from Central. Ive been meaning to try it...hopefully Ill remember tomorrow.

    Another addition:

Tobys Estate (60-something Albert St, its across the road). At least one single origin, brew bar and a Speedster... :drool

The espresso bar on Edward St is called Race Cafe. Using Blue Sky Coffees beans. Cool styling but espresso was disappointing. Sadly, with all the other places Ive mentioned vying for the early morning coffee, they probably wont get much chance to redeem themselves...YMMV.

So. I went looking for Sip Espresso today, and I couldnt find it. Is it still around? I found Stellarossa on Queen st instead and was quite impressed with my latte and my girlfriends mocha.

We checked out the unit listing at 344 Queen St, unit 5 now seems to be filled by an architectual company. If you check out google maps street view, no sign of Sip can be seen unfortunately. :( Merlos and the clothes store are stilll there.

It is hard to spot from Google maps, its down behind that big pillar and the resolution isnt good enough to spot any chairs or signage.

We had a good poke around where we thought it was, and it sounds like we were right. Some confirmation of its location would be appreciated if anyone is in the area?

Ive not been here but should be good, and its on my to do list.

Probably not a short walk to either place, but should be worth the effort. Ask the guys in Cup for any other locals to try.

    Re: Brisbane City - Where?

A computer search with Urbanspoon brings up many cafes in the south area of Brisbane.
If you can walk to the CBD you will be blown away by just how many coffee places there are. Would take a lifetime to visit all. We have tried a few and been satisfied.
If you can walk to Alens Espresso at 420 George St you will not be disappointed. Always as busy as.
Naked Coffee in Elizabeth Arcade at Shop 7 is worth the visit just to see the naked portafilter in action.
Enjoy your stay and your coffee experiences. Let us C.Ss know how you went when time permits.

Thanks Ronin and herbie. We have two places up here that routinely use naked PFs, unfortunately I have never seen a decent pour at one of them and the taste reflects this. Will certainly relay our experiences.

    Any other suggestions out there???

Tobys Estate, Pourboy, Frisky Goat, Cocoa Woo, Brother Espresso, Sip (may not be there...), Veneziano...all great options.

Tobys or Frisky are better options to see the naked portafilter in action, the quality of coffee at Naked is way down. YMMV but I dont care for Alens.

    Re: Brisbane City - Where?

Thanks again to all who chipped in with suggestions for coffee places in Brisbane.

My wife and I ended up at Cup in Russell Street, West End. It was obvious they are passionate about what they do. On offer was GUATEMALA SANTA CLARA as a SO and a 50/50 blend of the SANTA CLARA and EL SALVADOR EL RETIRO. We opted for the SO in our small flat whites. Although Im no cupping expert, it was a very nice coffee! My wife and I both agreed it had a lingering, almost bitter, after-taste that we didnt like. (Interesting, it was very similar to the coffee served at a place called "Findos" in Toowoomba. I have had several coffees there and the consistency of flavour is remarkable.) Back at Cup, I managed to observe 3 pours from the naked PF from a bit of a distance, but all looked good and were carefully observed by the barista and manually cut at about the same time. Overall a very pleasant experience with a quality cup of coffee produced with care and attention. Definitely worth a visit.

Had a very nice double ristretto (at the counter) and take away latte from Brother Espresso, Margaret St when working in Brisvegas last week. Both very good. Would happily return.

Toby's Estate on Albert Street has some great coffee, but the wait time there is beyond a joke sometimes, they really need to employ another barista (or 2), especially for weekday mornings.
I've been enjoying Naked Coffee in Elizabeth Arcade lately too.

Jeeze this location really needs an update from the locals.
In Brisbane last week I took my morning dose at Cafe Merinos in the ground floor of the Royal Albert Hotel.
Great staff who do the table service to the pleasant footpath area outside. Coffee is consistently good.
I didn't see a lot of "morning-tea" type food to go with the coffee however. Maybe I was unlucky.
