    Campos at UQ

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Was walking around the UQ St lucia campus this morning and I started noticing people carrying campos branded coffee. Now this is my third year at the uni, I thought I knew all of the cafes, and there was no cafe selling campos last year. I then got very excited when I saw this article.

Dropped in today, by far the best coffee on campus, not the best campos Ive had. But definitely better than any of the other options. The new Wordsmiths is also the only place on campus Ive noticed who advertises the fact that they can make piccolos. Which I am yet to try. Definitely recommended to any at UQ.

Wow, that brings back some memories...When I went through UQ Sport (Merlo) was the best by a long margin, possibly until the biosciences/technology precinct opened, I recall it being okay. Wordsmiths were good for chips and aioli, very healthy serving.

Yeah. Unfortunately the merlos there just doesnt do it for me. There was a single barista serving Piazza DOro who actually the passion. But she has a little trolley setup on the other side of the campus. Then there is a new cafe in the biosciences like you say. Serving pretty good lavazza. But its quite a walk from just about everywhere Im situated. But now wordies is back!

Went to the UQ Open Day today, with family. Wordsmiths were good for food and coffee. They have a LM and can produce good coffee from it. The barista certainly took care to ensure each coffee was well made.

While next to the library, we dropped into Merlos for a coffee. What a mistake. They advertised their Tanzanian Blackburn Estate as coffee of the month. I did not see until it was too late that they were using preground coffee out of a tin. Normally, I believe if you have nothing nice to say, then keep your mouth shut, but in this case the disappointment was too much. They need to be shamed for such an offence. Needless to say, despite all the good coffees I have experienced at some of their stores, this experience has turned me against them.

Hi Bosco. Glad you got a good coffee from wordies. They can do a nice cup when they try, often the milk is a little too hot fod me though. But that's not the end of the world. I agree with merlo's, waste of time. It's only advantage is it's proximity to the library and some of the major lecture theatres. Which is why i think it's so popular. I haven't bought a coffee there in nearly three years. It's also turned me off most other cafe's selling merlo, unfortunately.

Hi, I started a new job at UQ two weeks ago and had settled on Merlo cafe for my coffee, until my discovery of the Campos cafe today! Definitely a step up
Don't get me wrong, the Merlo cafe is still above average, however I don't think the training of all their baristas is up to scratch and this shows itself occasionally. They do appeal to the masses though - hence the long lines (busiest cafe I've ever seen - really).

I'm sure they won't miss me too much

You've had decent experiences with Merlo? I've always had terrible experiences with merlo. Also see the above comment about merlo using coffee from a tin.

Was this St. Lucia? Was it a red mobile cart?

    Yes, definitely St Lucia...

As for the red? I don't know if I should admit watching X Factor but after watching the girls in red lingerie... Well I'm afraid I've got red on the brain.....

I think it was a little red mobile cart... or was it a little red uniform... Or both!!??

Red mobile coffee cart sounds like Mr. Beans Coffee - Mr Beans Coffee Company. They have 3 or 4 carts around the campus and 1 shop front in the main food court. They're currently serving a Peruvian and a Columbian SO from Two Seasons Roastery. Chatting to one of the baristas, they will be changing to a costa rican and something else later in the year. Myself, I prefer the Peruvian.

    Yes, that's the one :thumb
I don't mind a Merlo's if I can't get something better... And for me anyway... Yes the Peruvian was another rung up the ladder...
    Nice uniform too...

Yes, I've had some decent coffee from there. Perhaps I'm getting less fussy.

I don't enjoy watching their reckless coffee making process though!

St. Lucy down near the tennis courts at UQ made me a very nice flat white the other day. Would happily try it again if in the vicinity.
