The Woodmans Axe at 47 Gregory St (City) near the Gordon St corner.
'Hole-in-the-wall' location. Very small inside but counter and 2 small tables.
Large outdoor area just outside and round the corner of the building.
Run by young enthusiasts. Friendly up-front presentation.
Quick service. V. good coffee. At the time of my visit they were cupping a dark-roast Ethiopian bean with mellow fruity notes. Very nice.
I detected some variation between Baristas on my consecutive visits.
The other one I tried to find but didn't was K & Co at 44 Nelson St. City. Not sure why I missed it (wife will say I had a 'Boy's look'.) but it comes with good reviews and I will try it on my next visit.
If you remember my post last year I frequently travel Central QLD, and in fact lived in Mackay about 18 months ago - back then when Woodman's Axe were on Sydney Street I could not fault them - went there every morning, and sometimes at lunch as well.
I've found them to be quite on and off over the last year, and in fact everywhere in Mackay has been generally poor over the last 12 months.
9th Lane Grind opposite Coffee Club on Wood Street isn't too bad, I find it weak without an extra shot in the large takeaway, but again it's not always made well unfortunately.
I will have a hunt for K & Co next week, based on the google street view it shouldn't be too much effort to find!
I travel to Mackay a bit for work.
Woodmans Axe is where I go...but it's hit and miss.
I didn't like K and Co at all...
But will give them all another go soon.
So the best coffee is actually in Sarina...Third Ground, just up over the railway tracks.
If I get a coffee in Mackay, I've been going to Burp lately as they do a decent long black (at least in comparison to anything else available!)
