Is my coffee now stale ?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
My wife kindly picked me up some fresh beans today from my local roaster, then proceeded to leave them in a steaming hot car for an hour in direct sunlight on the back seat.

Should I just throw them out now ? I am just wondering how much damage that would have done.

    thanks Tony

I am no expert either, thats why I asked. I guess you wouldnt touch milk that was left in the sun for an hour, so I was wondering if there were any hard and fast guides on this.

I have no other beans at the moment so I have no choice other than to use them. I have not used this blend before so I wont be able to fully judge how stale they are unless they have gone completely off and produce no crema etc which will then be more obvious.

I think the will be fine, drink up, people were drinking stale coffee for years before this whole freshness craze caught on.

then it probably doesnt matter if theyre stale or not, Id still use them ;D Beans left in the sun are better than none at all!

while I think it probably wasnt ideal for them to be left in a car, in the sun as you describe, Id wager the beans are still going to be in a better state than what youd get off the supermarket shelf.

While my wifes intentions were good....i did use the analogy that you wouldnt leave a baby in a hot car with all the windows up....and I am sure readers of this site would be able to appreciate the comparison ! :)

    Some might not..

Better to ask if she would have liked to be locked in the car..

Then again; some might say your devaluing life over roasted beans ;)

    Back on subject though :)....

I have had this happen once or twice in the past due to matter that were out of my hands and this is what i have found.

The coffee will taste much the same for now but will quickly turn in a few days.

Drink it now while you can and dont attempt to find out how long they may or may not last before going south.

Update on this....the beans are OK, but not up to their usual standard....they have more of a stale smell than Id usually associate with these beans....i think the time in the hot sun certainly had an effect...theyre drinkable though and better than anything Id find in the supermarket.

From a glass half full perspective, at least your car will have a nice aroma for a little while *:)
