Hottop Hacking KN-8828D - More of a thank you post

    Hey All,

I purchased a hottop quite a few years ago, it made terrible coffee on all the basic settings. Being a bit of a snob I started searching on this forum to see what i could find, hacks like the 1 button bypass which could be pressed during power up that allowed you to start the machine at a temp above the normal bootable temp was the beginning to my hacking obsession. How far could I take this?

I found a few other hacks on this forum, as well as purchasing my first replacement temp probe from heatsnob, this opened me up to a world of tracking and learning how to roast.

I won't hold out on photo's much longer but the rest of the story goes as follows, I found a random image online that lead me back to a guy in the USA's website he seemed pretty influential in the early days of hottops, I flicked him an email and he confirmed my research with a very basic guide based off his memory of doing a very similar hack 5 years earlier, I was able to remove the whole hottop auto roast computer and replace it with manual controls. I've been roasting some really nice roasts for quite a while now and am very happy with how far I could push this girl.

I wanted to share some images and a quick video of the action in case someone does pick up an old hottop and has the same crazy ideas.

USB Power for fan because having fan looping with all the other sensors drained to much power and stopped the bean eject from working properly

Yep! Underneath the screen of this specific version is a chipboard, i have that somewhere around the house but the chipboard had a wiring harness plugged in. oooh found some old photos!
Basically connecting 12V+ with any of the other control wires provides power to that sensor, e.g. connect brown with red and the drum motor will start :-)

Note Ive also found a better image hosting sorry about those crazy sizes above
