    !!SOLD!! Syd: Giotto Premium

So, it turns out it’s well over 12 months since I bought a new espresso machine. How time has flown.

See here’s the thing. A while ago, we had an espresso emergency at our house. There were a crowd of people turning up on Sunday, and they all had high expectations (bordering on demands) for espresso based drinks. So on the Saturday morning, the day before the crowd arrived, and with little research in advance, we bought a new machine. The next day, espresso was made, milky drinks were enjoyed, and life continued on it’s merry way, all the way to today...

But, there’s a darker side to this story. Turns out we’re also holding on to the past. That fateful espresso emergency Saturday morning, as was usual at our house, we turned on our ECM Giotto, our faithful espresso machine and waited for it to warm up – only this time, said espresso machine didn’t stop heating up, just kept going and going, and steam vented out. This in itself wasn’t a problem – heck, it’s typical when the pressurestat or sensor board fail, and something we’d seen a few times in Giotto’s lifetime, so we knew what was going on. But the looming arrival of peeps demanding coffee couldn’t be satisfied by poor old Giotto, so we made the snap decision to upgrade. But what would we do with poor old Giotto? Well, we convinced ourselves that we’d have him repaired and then we’d try to pass him on to a new family who would continue to love him and hopefully weren’t as hasty to replace him, as he really was still in great condition (and still is). We even started to write this post last year, but life got in the road, and it didn’t get priority, and someone could have got hold of this good fellow earlier – but life is what it is.

So here’s your opportunity to upgrade to a heat exchanger machine that looks the goods but won’t break the bank, or even to make the first move to an espresso machine that really sets a great standard.

Want the details? We don’t have the repair receipt any more, but it was ~April 2017 when we dropped him at Di Bartoli’s service centre in Bondi Junction, just before they moved to Roseberry. He got the full going over, the major repair replaced the pressurestat and all the minor bits replaced as well (gaskets and screens) and a comprehensive service ready for his sale. Since then, we have not even as much as filled his water tank or plugged him in, let alone pull a shot from him. We have all the bits you see in the photo, as well as a new jar of espresso clean and a cleaning brush, and a spare steam pressure gauge, worth $88 alone, as the current one isn’t always that reliable (which we understand is like most of this era of Giotto – and again, something we have replaced at least one other time). He is a Giotto Premium, with a “cool touch” dual sleeve milk steam wand. We have had him for over 12 years, and beside the last 12+ months of sitting unused, he’s been faithfully doling out up to a couple of espresso shots a day and steaming some milk, he’s been reasonably well looked after during that time but he definitely has seen his share of the standard Giotto failings, he’s had water and steam inside the case over the years so his (non-stainless) steel frame has some rust, and he’s had multiple replacement sensor boards, pressurestat units, vibration pumps etc, and he’s also had a new water tank fitted (you can take the old one as a “spare” in case). So he’s good to go, but you never can tell when the next failing will be, so he is being offered as-is, with no form of warranty.

So what did we replace him with? Since we had a move of house that was in early thoughts, we took the option to buy a rotary pump machine that can be plumbed in – and since we loved the look of our then-current Giotto, we actually bought another Giotto, although now produced by Rocket.

Now, 12+ months later and a house purchase has been made, it’s time to get serious and move the old Giotto on, as he can’t come with us when we go.

He’s for sale for $1150, but we’re willing to negotiate. We think the price is reasonable given his vintage and condition, and the almost $200 we dropped on the repair, and we expect him to make someone very happy at that price. We’d prefer to see him go to a CSer’s house than just a random off gumtree – but if we don’t get any bites here for a bit, we’ll be taking him over there to advertise since we really can’t take him with us.

He’s currently located in the Sutherland Shire in Sydney. Sorry, we really can’t offer to post or freight him elsewhere, he’s just too heavy and bulky to do so with. Come inspect him on a weekend, give him a whirl if you like, it’ll be his first time and then take him home with you.

My PM’s here don’t really work (long story short, I’ve been around for too many forum upgrades and that has been a consequence) so I can get your message but not reply. If you want to see him, include your email contact details in a PM and I’ll take the conversation over there.

(FYI the edit I did was to remove the weird expansion of "s.p.r.o" (no dots) that gets expanded to "expresso". Maybe that's just to stop its' use - make it look bad in public? Surely it wasn't accidental
