How big and heavy is it? Is it easy to adjust and can you take the handle off? Do I remember hearing that burrs were quite aggressive on the early Lidos which made them a bit more of a workout to operate? Iíd only really want to use it for soft brew so thatís somewhat helpful.

Hi Leroy- it’s about the same size as a bottle of dessert wine, and weighs around 1kg. It is built like a tank- stable and steady to grind with.

I’m fairly sure the handle screws off but I’ve never had the need to take it off. I’ve travelled with it many times and simply put it in my carry on bag with the handle up one end.

it is fairly easy to adjust, but not as easy as Lido 2 or 3 apparently but I never had any issues getting the grind right for a variety of beans and brew methods.

I found it easy to grind with. I have read some articles that actually say the Lido 2 was harder to grind with. I have never done a side by side comparison but I certainly have had no feeling of Lido 1 being tiresome to use.

    Hi Leroy.

As a previous Lido 1 owner I can vouch for it as a capable grinder, which at this price, can't be equalled. Maybe a little agricultural compared to later offerings but it is definitely an exercise in function over form.

Yes, the handle screws off, and you can see in the first photo that you have the option of a long or short throw handle length.

One potential weakness is the glass catch jar, which can be vulnerable to breakage. However, at least one of the peanut butter jars will fit and replacement glass jars are available from OE.

It's been a long time since I used one, but from recollection I don't think you'll find it heavy. The overall ergonomics were good. I have been eying this one off as a nostalgia trip, but I definitely already have too many coffee toys.

I can also vouch for the Lido 1, mine is still going strong as my daily driver, bought from Otago on here. I think the original Pharos had aggressive burrs, hence the aftermarket 'bench dog', but those on the Lido 1 are just right. For example I have recently switched from filter to Turkish and can grind 12g super fine powder no sweat. In terms of taste, for a filter cup, this grinder gives a very noticeably even grind at that range.
    Otago and Gavisconi007 like this.
